    Description

This auction is for a picture taken in 1944 aboard the Battleship
    BB-48 USS West Virginia
,during World War II. The huge shells for the Main Turrets with their 16 Inch Guns are on the deck waiting to be stored for battle. These guns were fired at the Battle of Leyte Gulf, onto the island of Iwo Jima, during the US Marines Invasion and inflicted death and destruction on the Japanese Navy and Army. The West Virginia was in Tokyo Bay,when the Japanese surrendered to General Douglas MacArthur on the deck of the USS Missouri. My Father served on the
    West Virginia
from 1944 until 1946,when he was discharged. This 4" x 6" photo is made from the original-the white strip will not appear in the photo sent.Great piece of WW II history.
